Southwest Ohio Health Care Affiliates, Inc. (SOHCA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association (GDAHA). The group currently specializes in local contracts that, due to the close geographic proximity of its members, result in better pricing being negotiated than currently available through the members' national group contract affiliations. Most current contracts are for items where freight is a large component of the cost. SOHCA joined MAGNET in December 1992, to enhance its contract portfolio with capital equipment agreements and contracts not offered through other national groups.


The purchasing program of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association was created in 1972, and was originally known as the Dayton Area Cooperative Purchasing (DACOP). The organization was started by Materiel Managers and Administrators of the member hospitals.


SOHCA exists in order to supply the needs of its member institutions. Obtaining more economical prices for members, through the concentration of buying power, is the primary objective. Other objectives include: fostering cooperation between member institutions; and informing member institutions of market conditions.


SOHCA is able to offer its members additional services through GDAHA and its other subsidiaries. GDAHA provides such services such as advocacy; government relations; establishment of masters degree program for physical therapists; data reports including utilization surveys; patient placement clearinghouse; disaster planning; environmental issues; infection control program; community health and other issues of concern to members.

GDAHA's charitable subsidiary, the Greater Dayton Health Information Network (GDAHIN), programs include: the Injury Prevention Center of the Greater Dayton Area (IPC); the Dayton Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium (DAGMEC); Disaster Medical Assistance Team OH-5; Ethics Consortium and the Firefighter's Burn Foundation.


SOHCA was established to serve members of GDAHA, which are located in ten counties in southwest Ohio. Currently 13 hospitals participate in the group purchasing program, representing 4,000 beds. The hospitals' affiliated urgent care, surgery centers and long-term care facilities are also members, as well as the Community Blood Center and Hospice.


Activities of SOHCA are directed by the Materiels Managers and Purchasing Directors of the members. Regular bi-monthly meetings are held with all members. In addition, periodic special meetings are held to address specific topics. Also, regular phone conversations ensure good communications and extensive input on SOHCA projects by the members. Reports on the activities of SOHCA are communicated to the chief executive and operating officers of the member hospitals, bimonthly, at GDAHA Board meetings.
